As the United States celebrates 250 years of freedom, innovation, and achievement, the Coalition to Strengthen America’s Healthcare is spotlighting the groundbreaking medical advances made possible by America’s hospitals and health systems. For generations, hospitals have transformed scientific discoveries into lifesaving care, delivering treatments that continue to save and improve patients’ lives every day.

Many procedures that were once considered impossible are now routine because of the tireless dedication, research, and innovation of America’s physicians, nurses, pharmacists, radiologists and healthcare teams. From the first clinical X-ray to today’s cutting-edge treatments, hospitals consistently expand what is possible in medicine, giving patients access to better care, better outcomes, and new hope.

That legacy continues today. Organ transplantation, once considered an extraordinary medical breakthrough, has become a lifeline for thousands of patients thanks to decades of hospital-led innovation. In May, Tampa General Hospital completed its 15,000th organ transplant, and in 2025, UCHealth in Colorado performed its 1,000th heart transplant, milestones that represent thousands of lives saved and families given more time together.

Hospitals also help patients at life’s very beginning. In Baton Rouge, Woman’s Hospital celebrated a historic milestone by delivering its 400,000th baby, marking more than 56 years of caring for families across Louisiana.

America’s hospitals and health systems continue to redefine what healthcare can achieve. In Florida, AdventHealth Celebration became the site of the first FDA-approved clinical research study involving transcontinental robotic telesurgery, with a surgeon performing a procedure on a patient in Angola from nearly 7,000 miles away. This historic milestone demonstrates how American medical innovation is expanding access to specialized care for patients regardless of where they live.

For 250 years, America has led the world through ingenuity, determination, and a relentless drive to solve impossible challenges. Our hospitals and health systems embody that same spirit every day, delivering lifesaving care, advancing medical science, and giving patients hope when they need it most. This Independence Day, we celebrate not only our nation’s history of innovation, but also the hospitals and healthcare professionals whose work continues to strengthen America by improving and saving lives.
