Healthcare affordability remains a top concern for Americans, and a new national survey commissioned by the Coalition to Strengthen America’s Healthcare leaves little doubt about who voters hold responsible: corporate health insurance companies.
According to the survey conducted by Morning Consult, 47% of voters identified corporate health insurers as the primary driver of rising healthcare costs, followed by the federal government (36%) and drug companies (34%).
These findings go beyond cost concerns.
79% of respondents said they are concerned about corporate health insurers denying or delaying doctor-ordered treatments, and 84% believe corporate health insurers have too much control over medical decisions. An overwhelming majority (70%) also agrees that clinicians, not big insurers, should have the final say on treatment approvals and coverage. The survey also found that 72% of voters are more likely to support candidates who will hold insurance executives accountable for wrongful claim denials.
What Does This Mean?
The data reflect a growing national consensus that corporate insurers have assumed an outsized and harmful role in American healthcare, worsening patients’ access to care, overriding professional medical judgment, and driving up costs for patients and families. When insurers prioritize revenue over care, the consequences ripple across the entire healthcare system, making healthcare less affordable and less accessible. Voters are paying attention and are increasingly demanding accountability from corporate insurers.
Methodology:
Morning Consult conducted the survey on behalf of the Coalition to Strengthen America’s Healthcare. This survey was conducted between May 22-May 24, 2026 among a sample of 2002 Adults. The interviews were conducted online and the data were weighted to approximate a target sample of adults based on gender by age, gender by children in household, race by educational attainment, educational attainment, marital status, home ownership, region, 2024 presidential vote, and race. Results from the full survey have a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
