Stories from the State
Advocates from across the country submit their patient stories about 24/7 care, large corporate insurers, and rural healthcare access in order to highlight the importance of access to care.
Without Medicare, my husband would not be alive! He has had to have multiple surgeries, and was in need of a procedure that allowed him him survive.

I live in a rural area. We have a small hospital about 10 miles from my home. Usually, patients with serious problems are transferred to larger hospitals farther away. If we didn’t have this rural hospital to address lesser needs or provide care, the next two larger hospitals are fifty to sixty miles away. Also, our rural hospital has a swing bed floor that helps with transition to full-time facilities or going home. This includes therapies such as physical therapy and occupational therapy. It also offers wound care, inpatient or outpatient. It would be greatly missed.
