Stories from the State

Advocates from across the country submit their patient stories about 24/7 care, large corporate insurers, and rural healthcare access in order to highlight the importance of access to care.
As a retired nurse who started my career in my 20s and didn’t stop until I was 74 years old. It’s concerning that rural hospitals and clinics are closing, and more are threatened by decreasing federal funding. I live in a very rural area (one stoplight in the whole county), and it’s important for citizens to have access to health care 24/7.

I had a bad infection that went septic overnight. My nurse friend Marcella found me totally unresponsive. She called an ambulance, and they got me to the hospital, where I spent 3 weeks. To this day, I feel Marcella saved my life and I consider her my guardian angel.
