Stories from the State

Advocates from across the country submit their patient stories about 24/7 care, large corporate insurers, and rural healthcare access in order to highlight the importance of access to care.
My healthy 65 year old husband had nearly a week of not being able to breathe in March. One evening he said that is it; we’re going to the hospital. It was right before midnight. He ended up 5 nights in the hospital. If we had not gone in that night, he’d probably be dead. Yes, we need 24/7 care.

I worked as a rural healthcare provider for 6 years and director of a rural hospital therapy department for 2 years. I have seen first hand the importance of rural healthcare access and the impact it has on the health of communities and the cost of care. The rising cost of care is an important issue but removing access to care from rural communities only serves to increase the cost of care for those communities as they are forced to access care miles away.
