Stories from the State

Advocates from across the country submit their patient stories about 24/7 care, large corporate insurers, and rural healthcare access in order to highlight the importance of access to care.
I had back surgery in 2013. Three days into recovery, my heart stopped. The nurses worked on me for 14 minutes to bring me back. I was in a medically-induced coma for two weeks in the ICU. Thank god for nurses and hospitals. If I had been home, I wouldn’t be here right now.

My wife has been going through small cell cancer treatment for nearly 2 years. Her treatments have been delayed and or denied by our insurance. The second treatment, her oncologist said, she could only have proton radiation, and the insurance denied it multiple times, delaying her treatment for nearly 4 months. During this time, her cancer spread to her brain. Now she is having brain radiation and after that chemo. I truly believe the delay in treatments contributed to the cancer spreading. We have to fight for every treatment with delays and denials.
