Stories from the State

Advocates from across the country submit their patient stories about 24/7 care, large corporate insurers, and rural healthcare access in order to highlight the importance of access to care.
In April, I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and ended up being hospitalized for 15 days. While in the hospital, nurses and physical therapists made my experience easier by listening and answering any concerns or questions that came to mind. This was deeply appreciated.

I have lupus and am a lupus patient advocate. This year has been horrible. I have Sjogren’s and have been suffering with my eyes. My eye doctor prescribed me drops that had to be preauthorized, and I was elated that they got approved. Until my pharmacy said it was a $300 co-pay. Then I called for more inexpensive eye drops, where I needed another preauthorization, and it got denied. That’s a little sample of my year. It’s so hard to battle disease and your insurance company at the same time.
