This February is American Heart Month, a reminder to prioritize heart health at every stage of life. In hospitals and health systems across the country, doctors, nurses and other caregivers work around the clock, providing preventive services and life-saving emergency treatment for cardiac arrest or stroke. American Heart Month is a perfect time to recognize the innovative work being done to address heart care across the country.

In New York, cardiologists at Northwell’s Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital became the first in the world to implant the smallest defibrillator lead ever designed, giving a 77-year-old man access to lifesaving care through a less invasive device. “Our dedicated team works together to drive cutting-edge innovation focused on enhancing patient outcomes,” said Dr. Laurence Epstein, Northwell Health’s Electrophysiology Director.

In Kansas City, Missouri, a man became the first patient in the nation to receive the experimental RELIVE heart failure procedure at St. Luke’s Hospital. The less invasive procedure for heart attack survivors restores energy and improves quality of life in just days. “Seeing how well Kenny has done just makes me so happy,” said Dr. Andrew Kao, St. Luke’s medical director of heart transplants.

The innovation doesn’t stop there. Banner Health in Phoenix, Arizona, successfully performed the nation’s first minimally invasive repair for leaky heart valves, allowing patients to avoid open-heart surgery and return home faster. “This new procedure offers a way for patients to get back to living their lives with less pain and better outcomes,” said Dr. Paul Sorajja, an interventional cardiologist at Banner Health.

This Heart Month, the Coalition is staying conscious of our heart health and thanking the countless hospital and health system workers for their dedication. Through their innovation and commitment, we can expand access to lifesaving cardiac care, improve patient outcomes and ensure more families have healthy years together. Because of those on the front lines of care, the heart of our health system continues to beat stronger than ever.
