Fall is in the air. Days are getting cooler and shorter, the leaves are starting to turn, and you might be digging a sweater out of your closet. It’s time for back-to-school season.

Johns Hopkins Medicine put together a handy guide for parents to consider as school starts up.

Here are some of their tips:

Focus on Nutrition

Make sure that you and your child are getting the nutrients you need to be successful during the day. This means enough of all of the major food groups (all of the major nutritional categories). Nutrient-rich meals help improve focus and ensure we all have enough energy to get through the day. It is vital for your brain!

Know the Risks Your Child May Face

Every age group faces different health concerns at school. For example, young children may face head lice, while college students may be more prone to meningitis. Make sure you get to know the health concerns that you and your child may face as the school year approaches.

Sleep, sleep, sleep!

Sleep is VITAL for brain function and development, especially during the tiring school season. This is equally as important for parents as it is children. According to Johns Hopkins, most healthy children need eight to ten hours of sleep per night. Make sure to help your student prioritize sleep, even during stressful times.

Be a Partner in Your Child’s Education, Health, and Wellness

Work with your child’s teachers to be the best partner you can be for their education. Learning doesn’t stop when your child leaves school.

Use these helpful tips to make this a great start to the school year! And if you or your child need extra help staying healthy this fall, you can always turn to your local hospital or health system, open 24/7/365.
